THE HIGHEST BUILDING IN NIGERIA
The Nigerian External Communication House (NECOM House) is the tallest building in Nigeria. It stands at 15 Marina, Victoria Island Lagos state, overlooking the Lagos waterfront. The communication spire at the top of the tower serves as a beacon. This helps sailors to guide their ships at night. Was built in 1979
Designed by a Ghanaian architectural company, Nickson Borys, and Partners while it was built by the British company, Costain Group. They are the famous builders of the Dolphin Square Apartments in London and the Dubai International Airport.
NECOM house was initially built to house the headquarters of the Nigerian External Communication. But it was acquired by the Nigeria Telecommunication Limited (NITEL) and converted to their headquarters.
In 1979, the NECOM House took over from the Cocoa House as the tallest building in Nigeria. This ended its 14 years reign as the tallest building in Nigeria. Interestingly, NECOM House is 5 times taller than the Cocoa House. But it only has 6 more floors than the Cocoa House. The Cocoa House has 26 floors while the NECOM House has 32 floors.
The NECOM House is 520 feet (160m) tall while it is 113 feet (36m) taller than the Union Bank Building.
On the 8th of December, 2015, the building suffered a fire outbreak at the top most floors. This made it the second time the building was gutted by fire. The first outbreak was in 1983, 4 years after the building was commissioned.
